SIDNEY, Iowa (KMTV) — An Omaha roofing company repaired a 21-year Marine Corps veterans’ roof for free after being nominated by friends and his wife.

Each year for Veterans Day, D&M Roofing and Siding in Omaha provides a free roof to a veteran. The 2019 recipient was Mike Crecelius, a veteran and current Fremont County Emergency Management Coordinator. On Wednesday, the company came out to Crecelius’ house in Sidney, Iowa to repair and update his roof.

“It was surprising,” Crecelius said. “I was totally surprised by the whole thing. I’m the kind of person that doesn’t believe in these types of things so I was in disbelief up until they showed up.”

This past fall Mike’s wife Teresa nominated her husband for the free room. She said she thought he deserved the honor for all his hard work helping people in the region through the 2019 floods and other natural disasters.

“Timing wise we didn’t have the funding to borrow or redo stuff on the house and I thought I’ll just try,” Teresa Crecelius said.

Eric Oberembt, the President of D&M Roofing and Siding, said he received multiple nominations from Crecelius’ friends and said picking him as the recipient was a no-brainer.

“The whole reason we’re all here is to help people and to be able to do that for someone that just helps and reward somebody that does this on a daily basis is humbling,” Oberembt said.

D&M Roofing and Siding also planned on doing Crecelius’ gutters and gave him roughly $7,000 in free repairs.

“I appreciated it very much it’s touching, it’s very touching,” Crecelius said.

This is the second year the roofing company has done free repairs for a veteran.
