For the first time in more than two decades, Omaha will have a professional basketball team.
The Omaha Chargers of the National Basketball League of America will begin play at Ralston Arena in September.
The Chargers will compete against teams in various professional basketball leagues and serve as a scouting ground for NBA and international professional basketball teams.
In a statement, Chargers President Darryl Greene says:
Omaha is the perfect place for professional basketball and the city is worthy of NBA level entertainment. Businesses are thriving and the sports scene is fantastic! With the presence of the Omaha Beef, Storm Chasers and Lancers, It only makes sense to add basketball to the other professional sport options for Omaha residents." said Greene. The Chargers plan to add some familiar faces to the roster including players from NCAA and NAIA programs throughout the state. Athletes from international countries will compete for roster spots in addition to pro prospects from the U.S.
Ticket information will be released at a later date. For more information about the National Basketball League of America, visit http://www.nblhoops.com.
