Vanessa Misciagna

National News Correspondent

Providing a platform for people, issues and ideas can inspire others to create solutions. That is the power of journalism and to be able to do that now on a national level is an incredible honor.

My name is Vanessa Misciagna and I joined E.W. Scripps as a National Correspondent and Specialty MMJ in June 2021. If you’re wondering what an MMJ is (don’t worry, you’re not alone), it means I not only write the stories but shoot and edit them, too. I’m a professional one-woman band.

Being behind the camera allows me to be more creative and establish a closer connection to the person I am interviewing and their story. Has this meant sometimes crunch editing on the floor of a Subway restaurant to make deadline because it was the only outlet for 25 miles? Yes. Would I ever consider giving up this part of my job? Not a chance.

Before my time at Scripps, I was an anchor, reporter, and MMJ at KING 5 News in Seattle. There I covered stories such as a stolen plane from Sea-Tac Airport, giving viewers a peek into the heartaches, and glimmers of hope, that can be found behind various stages of Alzheimer’s disease, and of course, the very beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic in the US. I’ve received Emmy and Scripps Howard awards from my time there.

My career started at WPTZ, based in Burlington, Vermont. This is not only where I learned the ropes of the business, but also where I fell in love with the mountains. Being based in Denver now, I can’t wait to explore the backcountry of Colorado on my skis or my own two feet through backpacking. I have a rescue dog who joins me on all my outdoor adventures.

Originally, I am from Simsbury, Connecticut, and went to school at Boston University, where I studied journalism as well as religion.

Still photography is another passion of mine and I’d love for us to connect on Instagram so I can share my expeditions, whether in town, across the country or deep in the woods. Find me at @vmisc on IG or @VanMisc on Twitter.

I’m always open to learning about different people and issues. Do you have a story idea? Please send me an email at vanessa.misciagna@scripps.com.
