1 injured, 3 families displaced by house fire

One person was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after a fire at a converted home left three families without a place to live.

It happened Sunday afternoon at a house converted into apartments near 26th Street and Poppleton Avenue.

Firefighters said smoke was pouring from the structure's basement and flames spread through the walls.

"So the walls have got gaps inside them, so it allows the fire, once it starts, in the basement to travel quickly. The newer homes are usually a platform base, so they have those fire stops built in, but with these older homes in eastern parts of Omaha, usually have this type of construction. So that's usually our first concern if we find the fire in the basement we automatically start sending crews up to the other divisions so we make sure there is no fire there," explained Battalion Chief Matt Carmichael.

The American Red Cross also responded to assist five adults and 10 children left without a home.
