2006 lottery winner's donation helps homeless

Posted

A Nebraska Powerball winner’s generosity continued this year with a donation for Omaha’s homeless.

Alain “Derek” Maboussou, who was one of eight coworkers who split a 2006 jackpot for $365 million, has since donated to the Siena/Francis house every year.

This year, his $25,000 donation allowed more than 500 residents of the shelter to get a $45 Walmart giftcard.

“Mr. Maboussou’s gift is extremely generous, and will go a long way in helping our homeless guests to have a very happy holiday season. On behalf of Siena/Francis House guests, we are very grateful to him for helping our shelter care for those who come to us in need,” Mike Saklar, executive director of the Siena/Francis House said in a prepared statement.

To help them shop, the shelter rented two school buses to take them to the store Tuesday morning.

“I love it. It’s helped me out. I get to get some stuff that I normally wouldn’t have gotten for myself,” said Peter York.

York said he plans to buy socks and hygiene products with his gift card.
