OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Fire crews were called to The Drover around 9 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters say they saw smoke and flames coming out of the roof of the steakhouse near 72nd and Mercy. An employee was in the kitchen when the fire started and it took just 20 minutes to get it under control.

"He (the employee) turned on the cooking stoves and before he knew it he had a fire and he did the right thing he got out and like i said there were multiple calls on it from around the area and we were on it and we were prepared," Battalion Chief Keith Main said.

The owner of the restaurant did not go on camera but said the inside of the restaurant had significant damage and does not know when it will reopen. The Drover was closed Monday for the holiday.

A report from the Omaha Fire Department estimates the damage was more than $500,000.
