Man convicted of punching elderly woman sentenced in court

Posted

It was an attack in Omaha that left many angry.

Two men robbing an elderly woman, one punching her in the face at a catholic church here in Omaha

It was all caught on security camera.

The video of the crime is difficult to watch for many.

Wayman Clark and Larry Legget walk into St Cecilia Cathedral, Legget grabs the elderly woman’s purse then Clark punches her in the face.

"He said it's the worst thing he's ever done in his life, he's just impulsive and unfortunately that's one of his issues," said Attorney Mike Poepsel.

Now the 24 year-old says he's sorry for his actions.

He and his family prayed just before his sentencing in front of a Douglass County Courtroom.

They did not want to speak on camera.

"The judge said ten to 12 years, which means he will be eligible for parole in half of the ten years," Poepsel said.

Clark's attorney says his client's criminal history and drug use may have a lot to do with his upbringing.

"Without the structure that a father provides in a home unit, his mother had her own issues, it's very difficult for a young person to grow up, especially in his environment," Poepsel said.

Clark is also ordered to pay one thousand dollars in fines and 286 dollars to the victim.

Clark will be up for parole in about five years and the judge says he will honor the 146 days Clark spent in prison before he was bailed out for the same crime.

"I kind of thought that was the range we were talking about, it’s such an unusual case without really pressing it," Poepsel said.

Clark’s partner Legget will be sentenced in November.

The priest at the cathedral where the elderly woman was attacked says she's doing well and has fully recovered.
