A new cellphone for Christmas might come with a new area code for eastern Nebraska residents.
Some new phone numbers are coming with the new area code 531.
Assignments of the new area code began in July 2014, according to a previous press release from the Nebraska Public Service Commission.
“In 1999 NANPA (North America Numbering Plan Administrator) informed the Commission that it must begin the process of selecting a plan for providing additional telephone numbers in the 402 numbering plan area as the current available numbers were depleting rapidly,” the commission explained.
