Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert released a new city budget proposal for the next year during the city council meeting.

A controversial item still in the 2017 budget the restaurant tax.

Mayor Stothert campaigned on eliminating that tax when she beat out then mayor Jim Suttle but the tax has remained.

Stothert said while she could have recommended a cut in the controversial restaurant tax, she chose to offer the property tax cut because she believes it would help more people.

The mayor is also proposing a two percent drop in property taxes and increasing OPD officer staffing to 860 once that round of annexation is complete.

Other key points include increases for the fire department ,the demolition of old abandoned buildings, technology upgrades for area libraries, street resurfacing and  snow removal.
