Omaha parks fill with grill smoke for Labor Day

Posted
While Monday was not a day off for political candidates, for many others, Labor Day was a day to enjoy family, friends and picnicking.

With a warm, sunny day and a nice breeze, you couldn't ask for better conditions to top off the last holiday of summer.

Nicole Rich, originally from Texas, says this is one of the nicest summer days off she's had in Omaha.

"Perfect,” Rich said. “The sun's out. It's breezy, which hasn't happened since the entire time I've been here in Omaha. It's nice. It's a good day."

For Rich, it's a day to enjoy being lazy.

"Just be lazy,” she said. “It's nice. It's a good chance to go outside. It's the last holiday of the summer. So you want to spend it outdoors, not inside working all day on a computer which 90 percent of us do anyway. It's nice to come outside and enjoy the air and sunshine for once on a Monday. You can't go wrong with a Monday without working."

The people of Benson Park enjoy the holiday in many ways.

For Deloris Walker, it’s more than hamburgers and hotdogs.

"It's not all about grilling and food,” Walker said. “It's all about connecting, connecting with people I don't even know. People make different connections. Other people have their stories about their lives. It is about celebrating everybody that might have passed."

Walker made more hamburgers and hotdogs than she and her grandkids can eat.

She’ll give leftovers to friends and family in need.

"Being with my family and connecting with my family; building a bond and relationship with the people who are in my life and having memories of people who have gone on in life," Walker said.
