OMAHA, Neb. — The winter weather took its toll on roads throughout Omaha Wednesday morning.
While crews were able to clear the main roads, some of the side streets stayed snowy throughout the day.
"They're not great as you can see," said Jared Runde, an Omaha resident who lives near 108th and Q in Omaha. Runde's road is less than 100 yards from 108th street which was completely plowed off.
"Once it's clear on 108th street it's at least another 12 hours until the trucks get to these roads," Runde said.
In Sarpy County almost all of the roads 3 News Now checked out were completely plowed, including the residential streets.
"It's very rare that we have an issue with our roads," said Peter Young, a Sarpy County resident who was outside shoveling his driveway. "They do a nice job and they're here early."
According to Dennis Wilson, the Sarpy County Engineer, the county's biggest issue Wednesday for roads was slush.
"We had the snow melting and hitting wet pavement so it has been trying to scrape things and get it to the side of the road," Wilson said.
Wilson said crews had been out since 4 a.m. clearing the streets. He said crews plowed the main streets first before starting on residential ones.
"If you don't do the arterials first then you are going to have people go through the neighborhoods without being able to go any place else," Wilson said.
With wintery conditions, Sarpy County salted the roads but Wilson said salt doesn't work as well when dealing with slush.
"The salt is going to take care of mainly the top layers," Wilson said. "It doesn't do a whole lot for that because once the salt hits it becomes diluted from all of the water."
