Omaha woman to return to Puerto Rico after six month delay

Posted

You could call it a new beginning for the New Year.

Back in September, we introduced you to Pamela Siddiq of Omaha, who has lived in Puerto Rico during the last eight years. She was in Omaha for a family reunion when Hurricane Maria hit. She spent weeks not knowing anything about her home or belongings.

After being stuck in Omaha for nearly 5 months, Siddiq finally has a return flight set.

“I miss the weather, I miss the island,” said Siddiq. “The last couple of months have been anticipation and wondering what the state is of being down there really is.”

Since power was out for weeks on the island, Siddiq was not able to get updates on the condition of her apartment in San Juan.

Desperate for answers, Siddiq and her daughter took an impromptu trip to Puerto Rico in November to assess the damage to her home and car.

“Thankfully my apartment did not have much disruption but my neighbor right across the hall from me – his wall was completely destroyed, his furniture in dismay, because the hurricane came from the East and he was on the East side of the building,” said Siddiq.

Siddiq purchased a round-trip flight in November, knowing the city still has much work to do before she can return home; including restoring traffic lights, which Siddiq says makes her nervous.

Siddiq is scheduled to return home to San Juan on January 31.
