Fallen Omaha Police officer Kerrie Orozco will receive a special honor next month.
Organizers for National Police Week will engrave her name on a memorial in Washington, D.C..during a ceremony on May 12th. Her closest friends, colleagues and family will be in the nation's capitol for the event. Officer Orozco died in the line of duty in May of 2015, the same day she was going to take maternity leave after the birth of her daughter.
Orozco was well-known for her volunteer work in the community. Orozco's friend, Omaha Police officer Jessica Swanson says her death has brought the fellow officers she left behind closer together. "In the time after this horrible tragedy obviously we've become very close especially with the family we're there to support them we're going to put a good showing in D.C" said Swanson.
The First Responders foundation has a fund available to get even more officers to Washington, D.C. for the ceremony. They've passed the halfway mark to the $50,000 goal.
