A power outage was reported in parts of the Creighton University campus Tuesday afternoon.
A representative with the university’s maintenance department said the outage was west of 24th Street and included the dormitories. Twelve buildings went black around 10 a.m. Thursday, including Kiewit and Gallagher halls, two freshmen dorms. University officials said 675 students were not allowed to go back to their rooms until the lights came back on.
University telephone and Internet systems were also cut during the outage. Officials said they were back online by Tuesday afternoon.
The Omaha Public Power District said it was not an issue with any of their equipment, but crews were helping resolve the problem. Creighton confirmed two of its circuits blew. Officials did not know of the outage was related to a steam pipe leak near 25th and Burt.
Creighton had contractors on campus Tuesday to assess the situation. Maintenance officials were also bringing in generators to power the buildings while crews repaired the broken circuits.
The university has set up cots for some students to sleep on overnight. Officials said they would decide if mid-terms went on as scheduled early Wednesday morning.
