Omaha police arrested 27 year old Jared Nichols Sunday.

They say he fired the gun that injured four year old Princeton Davis near 33rd and Blondo.

Nichols was arrested Sunday for child abuse by intent to cause serious injury and tampering with physical evidence.

The suspect's brother Denis Nichols, who was also a witness says his brother would never purposely harm a child.

A typical Sunday at this home quickly became a crime scene when a four year old child was shot in the hand.

"I was scared for the little boy mostly, and my brother."

Dennis Nichols says his brother Jared Nichols was watching his girlfriend's four year-old son Princeton Davis when the unexpected happened.

"This little boy grabbed his gun off this lap and shot himself in the hand."

Nichols says he was on the back porch when it happened.

"I heard it, I turned around, and he was trying to stop the bleeding.” “He cleaned his hand and stuff."

According to the police report Jared Nichols threw the gun in a nearby sewer before police arrived.

We spoke with Princeton’s mother who was not there at the time, she says Princeton is recovering but wishes Jared Nichols would have been more careful.

"He said he'll never have a fire arm in the house again."

Dennis Nichols says he's thankful because the incident could have been worse.

"He's perfectly fine, the bleeding stopped he didn't hit any bones or tendons in his hand.”

“So the little boy is going to be ok, he just a little shaken up and upset."

Princeton's mother says he should be leaving the hospital soon.

Nichols remains in Douglas county jail.
