It's a name most Omahans recognize because of the art museum and Joslyn Castle
But many people don't know the story behind the name...
The Joslyn Castle is beautiful from the outside. But who were the people that called this mansion home every day?
"I have never been to the castle, but I have been around the grounds because the flowers and stuff are so beautiful around here,” Samantha Hawley said.
We recently went on an unlocked tour, with Omahans like Hawley.
Many folks who called Omaha home.
Even know the name Josyln but only to the extent of the Joslyn Castle and the Joslyn Art museum.
So just who were the Joslyns?
George Joslyn made his fortune in the ready-print news business and owned the western newspaper union. Think the Associated Press before the AP was a thing.
The Joslyns contributed to many Omaha-area organizations, including Sarah Joslyn's donation which made Omaha’s Joslyn Art Museum possible.
"Some people think it's a footbath, but it's actually a dogs watering dish."
A lover of animals and children, Sarah Joslyn was on the executive boards of the child saving institute and the humane society.
The castle shares this with the story of their St. Bernard's collar.
That's just part of it. George donated $25,000 in the earliest days of the University of Omaha, providing the building that housed the university until it moved to its current location in 1938.
As you look at Omaha today, you can't throw a rock without hitting something that the Joslyn's have a connection with. A couple with the foresight, setting the example for a community's giving future.
