It took until the second week of September but the Blackshirts are back.
seven huskers defenders are donning the dark jerseys on the practice field.
Freedom Akinmoladun was one of the seven huskers to receive the jersey Monday.
a blackshirt in previous seasons, the senior understands the responsibility entailed with wearing the uniform each practice.
"We have to live up to the name," Akinmoladun said. "It's not just a shirt, it's a culture, it needs to have more of a meaning than just throwing the bones. getting a Blackshirt is unbelievable but coming up to the Troy game I will have a high-expectation for me and the other people who see the Blackshirt."
While awarding the jersey is a special moment, someone also had to break the news to the guys that didn't get one. That responsibility fell to Erik Chinander.
"I had to talk to every kid that didn't get one, to every one you guys thought deserved one, maybe the ones the fans thought deserved one. we had to explain to each one why they didn't get one this week. There's a reason each guy did or did not get a Blackshirt and some are on the very cusp but their habits up to the game did not warrant it yet. I'm not saying they won't get one by the end of the season, but right now they are who they are."
Dicaprio Bootle is the only one in the secondary to receive a Blackshirt and defensive backs coach Travis Fisher said they're not going to pass Blackshirts out like candy.
