UNO hockey opened up the 2016-17 season with an exhibition match against the University of Alberta. Unfortunately for the Mavs, they started this season much like they ended the last, falling to the Canadian side, 3-2 final.
The Mavs scored the first two goals of the game early in the first period. First, Fredrik Olofsson converted on a breakaway chance to put UNO ahead 1-0. The Mavs added to their lead about three minutes later, when Jake Randolph fired a long assist to Mason Morelli, who found the back of the net.
But the Golden Bears of Alberta answered with two goals of their own to end the first period. And then added another score late in the third period for the 3-2 victory.
UNO now heads to Alaska for the Brice Alaska Goal Rush, starting Friday.
