The defending Class A State Champions Millard North Mustangs take on the 2014 Class A State Champions Omaha North in the first game of the high school football season tonight at 7 p.m. at Buell Stadium.
Millard North head coach Fred Petito said this opening matchup with Omaha North is the perfect measuring stick game for his team.
"It tells you exactly where you're at," Petito said. "Nobody knows. You think you have a pretty good team, and I think they're going to have a pretty good team. But they'll expose you, you'll expose them. It only makes you better. It's a win-win situation for both teams."
Much like Petito, Omaha North head coach Larry Martin enjoys opening the season with a tough opponent.
"Big challenge in front of us, but it's time to go play a football game," Martin said. "The nice thing about playing good, quality opponents at the beginning of the season is that you know where you're at, and you know where you've got to go then."
The Mustangs are entrenched in a quarterback battle between junior Cade Elwood and senior Dylan Price, while the Omaha North returns senior quarterback Justin Jackson-Williams.
