May 2018 Was One Of The Warmest On Record

Days of Record Heat Ended the Month

Overall, May 2018 in Omaha came in above average on temperatures and below average on rain. That's not a great combination if you enjoy sleeping with the windows open with the noise of steady rain falling outside.

On average, Eppley Airfield's rain bucket picks up 4.76 inches of rain in May, but we fell well short of that number this year. We saw less than half of that rain, picking up just under 2 inches this May.

When you're below average on rain, it's not uncommon to be above average with the temperatures, and that was the case this year. This May was the second warmest May on record for Omaha! When you average the high and low temperature for each day, then average those all together, you get an average temperature of 70.6 degrees for May 2018. That took only second place to May 1934, when the average temperature was 72.9 degrees.

Helping to put us near the top of the record books was the high heat at the end of the month. At Omaha's Eppley Airfield, we either tied or set new record high temperatures four days in a row. That stretch of heat included two days at or above 100 degrees. The earliest record of 100 degree heat in Omaha is May 14th, so we only missed that record by about two weeks.

Overall, our average high temperature for the month came in at 83 degrees, about 9 degrees above average. The mornings were also warm, averaging 59 degrees. That's about 8 degrees warmer than average.
