OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — If you need delicious, decorative cakes, The Cake Gallery in Omaha is still open.
They offer cookies, baked goods and cakes for special occasions...or any occasion for that matter.
"This is to myself, I got hungry for cake," said one customer.
Since COVID-19 business has been down.
"You know most bakeries they survive off of April, May and June sales just because that's when you're going to be the busiest between wedding cakes, religious events, graduations, so all of that has been canceled," said manager Naomi Jamerson. "Easter was canceled; we typically do breads and rolls for Easter. We didn't this year just because of the amount of traffic that we are not receiving."
They've gone from a staff of about 25 to now around 10.
"We actually had to cut staff and lay people off for the time being until we can bring people back, because a lot of large parties are canceled and work isn't as great as what it normally is," said Jamerson.
But they are happy to be open for customers, especially their bride customers who had to cancel their wedding or are those who are fearful the wedding of their dreams won't happen.
"We're giving our brides that are affected by COVID one full year from their original wedding date to postpone theirs and decude a new date for them; if there are extra costs involved as far as deliveries or anything like that, we are waving any extra fees for deliveries, just because this a pandemic, this is not their fault, and we want to be a good pillar of the community, because the community has done so well for us," said Jamerson.
And they are adjusting for customers to still do cake tastings, by offering them to take cake home.
"So we are offering for you to take your samples home and then come back later to have a face-to-face conversation," said Jamerson. "We also do it through email if you'd like. We can do it through text messages, over the phone, I've offered facetime as well."
They are allowing customers to still stop in, but are sanitizing everything in sight and taking extra precautions like wearing masks.
"We decided immediately to eliminate anything in the store that the customer would be able to touch - so pens, coffee cakes, even the books to look through for designs and things like that. We immediately went to carside, where if you prepay for the cake, you just give us a call and once you get here, and then we bring the cake out to you," said Jamerson.
